Further Research (Idea Development: Suburban house)

In this post, I will share my development ideas that lead to my final design of my project.

Initially, I researched on suburban houses in the United States. Upon my research, suburban houses have been a US "trend" for houses for ages. With simple concrete walls and brick roofs (Stern, 1981). Although there is no precise date of when suburban houses first created, it has been the standard for houses in the United States. However, in modern times, suburban houses has change to fit the modern trends. In this post, I will share my research about the Oak Residence in suburban Quebec City.

The primary aspect that I have taken an interest in is the exterior design of the house. The majority of the house is clad in warm-toned timber panels. The glass-enclosed lounge block has dark walls that complement the garage's brickwork (Cogley, 2017). This modern look stands out against the surrounding traditional homes.

"Minimal and sober, the facades are the result of the imbrication of the living volume in wood and the garage in bricks" (Cogley, 2017)

The interior design of the house is not just aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional. The all-white laminated cabinetry in the kitchen reflects natural light, creating a bright and airy space. The sliding glass doors and floor-to-ceiling windows not only enhance the visual appeal but also allow for ample natural light and ventilation.

"Discrete and intimate in the front, the house opens up in the backyard thanks to wide bay windows that provide natural lighting to the living area," the architects said (Cogley, 2017).

Fig. 3 shows the floor plan for the ground floor of my project. The sliding doors and white walls inspired the design of the living room. Allowing natural light to enter the house gives it a welcoming presence and a comfortable setting for residents to relax in the living room.
