Initial Research (Peter Zumthor)

In this post, I will be talking about Peter Zumthor, a Swiss architect who has an uncompromising and minimalist style to his design. The work I will discuss is the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art (LACMA).

Peter Zumthor plans to demolish the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's (LACMA) current structures and erect a new, solar-powered complex. (Amy Frearson, 2015) The building has a large flat roof that will be suitable for installing solar panels for sustainability. The idea of Peter Zumthor taking advantage of LACMA's large flat roof and installing solar panels is what I would implement towards my project. My project will be mass-produced so that families can stay for a long time. Thus, the project must last for generations to come, and the materials used must be sustainable so that the cost of living will not burden families and will not continue to pollute the environment.

Peter Zumthor's next work is a villa on a hilltop in South Devon, England, amidst the countryside. The entire home will be constructed using hand-rammed concrete. The large and deep window openings showcase the beauty of the surroundings while emphasising the thickness of the concrete material used (Amy Frearson, 2020). Hand-rammed concrete is a material that I am considering using for my project since it is a technique that gives stripes to the wall, both inside and out. The villa is a one-story building with enough facilities, such as bedrooms and restrooms, for a family of three. The villa's design is simple yet polished and elegant, which resembles the minimalist style I want in my project.

This technique is aesthetically pleasing and has high durability. However, choosing between hand-rammed earth or concrete is a debate I will research further in my next post.

  1. Good, better effort here. Would like to see some development drawings that show how you design is progressing. Use the light pads to make some concept sketches - the more the better, the more we see how you are thinking, the better impact this will have on your mark at assessment.
